Limited Government

Limited government is the political philosophy that the role of government should be restricted to specific, well-defined functions and should not encroach on individual freedoms or the autonomy of citizens. It advocates for a government that operates within a framework of laws, ensuring personal rights and freedoms while avoiding excessive intervention in the economy and private life.

From a libertarian populist perspective, limited government is a core principle that supports individual liberty, personal responsibility, and the protection of natural rights. Libertarians believe that the government should exist solely to protect citizens from force, fraud, and the violation of property rights. This includes maintaining law and order, ensuring national defense, and administering justice—nothing more.

Libertarian populists argue that government should not regulate markets, interfere with private businesses, or impose high taxes. They view unnecessary government spending, entitlements, and excessive regulation as barriers to economic growth, personal freedom, and social progress. By minimizing government interference, they believe individuals and communities can flourish, as people are free to pursue their own goals and solutions.

A limited government also means decentralizing power, pushing authority away from Washington, D.C., and closer to local communities. Libertarian populists advocate for policies that return more control to states and individuals, where they believe decisions are more reflective of local needs and values.

Critics of limited government argue that such an approach may fail to address systemic inequalities, environmental concerns, and issues requiring collective action, such as public health or education. However, libertarian populists counter that voluntary cooperation, free markets, and decentralized decision-making are better solutions than top-down, one-size-fits-all government interventions.

In essence, limited government is about restraining the scope of governmental power, preserving individual freedoms, and empowering citizens to take control of their own lives without excessive state interference. It’s a philosophy grounded in the belief that the best government is one that governs least, allowing people to live freely and independently.
